Maintaining military vessels (also known as \u201cmaintenance\u201d or \u201clife cycle support\u201d) involves a range of activities that ensure the vessels remain safe, deployable and operationally reliable, often well beyond their original design life.<\/p>\n

Activities include:<\/p>\n

  • Upgrading or replacing obsolete systems to meet new operational requirements<\/li>\n
  • Integration of more energy-efficient and cleaner technologies (hybrid drive, battery storage)<\/li>\n
  • Improvements in living spaces, workshops, bridges and command centers<\/li>\n
  • Testing and renewal of fire extinguishing systems, sprinklers and emergency evacuation systems<\/li>\n
  • Upgrades of electronic navigation systems<\/li>\n
  • Integration of new sensor technologies and data linkages<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The goal of maintaining military vessels is to ensure maximum deployability, at a manageable cost, while maintaining safety and reliability. Regular inspections, maintenance and modernization keep vessels operationally deployable even as technical requirements and threats change. Conservation extends the life of vessels, ensures that crews can operate safely, and allows for efficient response to new operational needs. <\/p>\n
